ARCTIC MONKEYS - WHATEVER PEOPLE SAY I AM, THAT'S WHAT I'M NOT
Original UK/EU Vinyl Pressing
Arctic Monkeys’ debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, is one of the defining records of British indie rock in the 2000s. Released in January 2006, it arrived with an extraordinary sense of momentum, capturing the energy of the band’s early live shows while documenting the nightlife, characters and restless atmosphere of their Sheffield hometown.
From the opening rush of “The View from the Afternoon” through the instantly recognisable “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor”, the album rarely lets the energy drop. “Fake Tales of San Francisco”, “Dancing Shoes” and “Still Take You Home” combine Alex Turner’s sharply observed lyrics with the band’s wiry guitars and relentless rhythm section.
The record’s quieter moments are equally important. “Riot Van” offers a glimpse of vulnerability beneath the bravado, while “Mardy Bum” became one of the band’s most enduring songs. The album then builds towards “When the Sun Goes Down”, “From the Ritz to the Rubble” and the cinematic closing track “A Certain Romance”.
Produced by Jim Abbiss, the album captures Arctic Monkeys at the point where their raw, DIY beginnings collided with major-label attention. Its combination of rapid-fire guitar playing, observational songwriting and distinctly northern sense of humour made it feel unlike almost anything else in British rock at the time.
The album became the fastest-selling debut album in UK chart history at the time of its release, won the 2006 Mercury Prize, and helped establish Arctic Monkeys as one of the most important British guitar bands of their generation.
