Billie Eilish’s third studio album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, is a record built around contrast — intimate and expansive, delicate and explosive, vulnerable and confrontational. Released in May 2024, it sees Eilish and her brother FINNEAS continuing their remarkably close creative partnership, writing, recording and producing the album together in Los Angeles.
Rather than chasing individual singles, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT is designed as a complete listening experience, with songs flowing naturally into one another and recurring musical ideas tying the record together. The result is an album that feels deliberately cohesive while constantly shifting in atmosphere, moving between sparse electronic production, cinematic arrangements, distorted textures and some of Eilish’s most emotionally direct songwriting.
The album opens with “SKINNY”, a restrained and deeply personal introduction before giving way to the immediate energy of “LUNCH” and the atmospheric “CHIHIRO”. “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” became one of the album’s defining moments, pairing a deceptively bright melody with lyrics centred on devotion and the fear of losing someone.
Elsewhere, “WILDFLOWER” explores guilt and complicated emotions, while “THE GREATEST” gradually builds from quiet reflection into a dramatic, distorted climax. The second half moves through the shape-shifting “L'AMOUR DE MA VIE”, the unsettling “THE DINER” and the fragmented “BITTERSUITE”, before arriving at “BLUE”, an expansive closing track that draws together musical and lyrical elements from across the album.
Produced by Eilish and FINNEAS, the record demonstrates just how far their minimalist approach can be pushed without losing its emotional intimacy. HIT ME HARD AND SOFT feels carefully constructed as a single piece of work — an album where transitions, textures and atmosphere are just as important as the individual songs.
This edition is pressed on recycled black vinyl, using leftover wax from the manufacturing process to reduce material waste. Housed in a gatefold sleeve with printed insert, it offers a particularly fitting physical edition for an album whose themes are closely connected to sustainability, intimacy and the natural world.
