blink-182, the band’s fifth studio album, marked a dramatic shift in sound and attitude for the San Diego trio. Released in November 2003, it arrived after the enormous success of Enema of the State and Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, but instead of repeating that formula, Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker deliberately pushed blink-182 into darker, more experimental and emotionally mature territory.
Often referred to as the band’s self-titled album, the record was intentionally left without a conventional title. Its distinctive smiley-face artwork became an instantly recognisable part of the band’s visual identity, while the music itself represented a significant departure from their earlier pop-punk sound.
The album opens with the explosive “Feeling This”, before moving through the angular “Obvious”, the atmospheric “I Miss You” and the darker intensity of “Violence”. “Stockholm Syndrome” and “Down” continue the album’s increasingly expansive sound, while “The Fallen Interlude” provides a brief atmospheric pause before the frantic energy of “Go”.
The second half moves through “Asthenia”, “Always” and “Easy Target”, with “All of This” featuring a particularly notable guest appearance from Robert Smith of The Cure. The album closes with “Here’s Your Letter” and the haunting “I’m Lost Without You”, ending the record on a deliberately reflective note.
Produced by Jerry Finn, blink-182 captures a band consciously moving beyond the teenage humour and straightforward pop-punk structures of their earlier work. The songwriting became more personal, the arrangements more adventurous and the production considerably more expansive, making it one of the key records in the band’s evolution.
This edition is the 2016 Geffen Records reissue on 180g black vinyl, presented across two LPs in a gatefold sleeve. The fourth side is etched with the album’s iconic smiley-face design, making the physical edition particularly distinctive for collectors.
