CHRIS STAPLETON - TRAVELLER
2LP VINYL EDITION
Traveller is the acclaimed debut studio album from American country singer-songwriter Chris Stapleton, originally released on 5 May 2015. Blending traditional country, Southern rock, blues and soulful storytelling, the album introduced audiences to one of modern country music’s most distinctive voices, built around Stapleton’s powerful, weathered vocals and deeply expressive songwriting.
Recorded primarily at Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A, the album was produced by Dave Cobb, whose stripped-back approach captures the warmth and immediacy of Stapleton’s performances. Rather than relying on polished, contemporary country production, Traveller draws on classic country, blues and rock influences, allowing the musicianship, lyrics and emotional weight of each song to take centre stage.
The album’s breakthrough came with “Tennessee Whiskey”, a soulful reinterpretation of the country standard originally recorded by David Allan Coe and later popularised by George Jones. Stapleton’s blues-inflected version became one of the defining performances of his career, showcasing the extraordinary range and character of his voice.
“Nobody to Blame” delivers a more driving country-rock sound, while “Fire Away” explores the emotional strain of a relationship through intimate lyrics and a powerful vocal performance.
Across the record, Stapleton balances heartbreak, reflection and hard-earned wisdom. “Parachute” brings an energetic, roots-rock edge, while “Whiskey and You” strips everything back to a raw and vulnerable meditation on loss. “More of You” offers a tender declaration of love, and “When the Stars Come Out” captures the atmospheric storytelling that runs throughout the album.
The later tracks deepen the record’s exploration of life, faith and personal struggle. “Daddy Doesn’t Pray Anymore” is a moving reflection on family and belief, while “Might as Well Get Stoned” brings a relaxed, bluesy groove. “The Devil Named Music” explores the sacrifices of a life devoted to songwriting and performance, before “Sometimes I Cry” closes the album with a powerful display of Stapleton’s soulful vocal delivery.
Traveller went on to become a landmark release in modern country music, earning widespread critical acclaim and major industry awards. Its success was further amplified by Stapleton’s celebrated performance alongside Justin Timberlake at the 2015 Country Music Association Awards, helping introduce his music to a much wider audience.
Combining timeless songwriting, exceptional musicianship and an unmistakable voice, Traveller remains an essential album for fans of country, blues and Southern rock.
