Ed Sheeran’s second studio album, x (pronounced “Multiply”), marked a significant step forward from the acoustic intimacy of his debut +. Released in 2014, it expanded Sheeran’s sound into a more ambitious blend of folk, pop, hip-hop and R&B, while retaining the direct songwriting and storytelling that had established him as one of Britain’s biggest emerging artists.
The album opens with “One”, a stripped-back introduction that gradually gives way to the huge, rhythmic energy of “I'm a Mess” and “Sing”, the latter produced with Pharrell Williams. From there, Sheeran moves effortlessly between styles — the sharp, confrontational “Don’t”, the intimate “Nina”, and the beautifully understated “Photograph” all reveal different sides of his songwriting.
The second half of the record contains some of Sheeran’s most enduring material. “Bloodstream”, produced with Rick Rubin, transforms a personal experience into a brooding, expansive piece of modern pop, while “Tenerife Sea” strips everything back again. “Runaway”, “The Man” and “Thinking Out Loud” continue that balance between experimentation and classic songwriting, before “Afire Love” closes the album with one of its most emotionally powerful moments.
Sheeran worked with a diverse group of producers and collaborators on the record, including Pharrell Williams, Rick Rubin, Jake Gosling, Benny Blanco and Johnny McDaid. That range helped x become a remarkably varied album without losing its central identity.
The album became a huge commercial success, topping the UK Albums Chart and producing a run of international singles that helped establish Sheeran as a global superstar. “Thinking Out Loud” in particular became one of his signature songs and one of the defining tracks of his career.
This edition is the 180g 45 RPM double-LP pressing, housed in a gatefold sleeve with illustrated lyric inner sleeves. Spreading the twelve tracks across four sides gives the album plenty of room to breathe, making this a particularly satisfying physical presentation of one of Sheeran’s most important records.
