EMINEM – THE MARSHALL MATHERS LP
25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION | VINYL 2LP
The Marshall Mathers LP is the third studio album from American rapper Eminem, originally released on 23 May 2000. Following the enormous success of The Slim Shady LP, the record cemented Eminem’s position as one of the most influential and controversial artists in hip-hop, combining intricate rhyme schemes, dark humour, provocative storytelling and deeply personal reflections on fame, family and identity.
Produced primarily by Dr. Dre and Eminem, the album blends hard-hitting hip-hop beats, cinematic samples and sharply constructed lyrics with a confrontational style that challenged expectations of mainstream rap at the turn of the millennium. Across its eighteen original tracks, Eminem moves between fictional characters, satirical commentary and autobiographical material, creating a record that is as technically ambitious as it is uncompromising.
The album opens with “Public Service Announcement 2000” before launching into “Kill You”, an aggressive introduction that establishes its deliberately provocative tone. “Stan”, featuring Dido, remains one of Eminem’s most celebrated recordings, using a narrative about an increasingly obsessive fan to examine celebrity, identification and the consequences of feeling unheard. Its storytelling structure and haunting sample helped make it one of the defining tracks of his career.
“The Way I Am” offers a forceful response to the pressures of sudden fame, while “The Real Slim Shady” became a global hit through its irreverent humour and sharp satire of celebrity culture and the music industry. Elsewhere, “Who Knew” challenges the controversy surrounding Eminem’s lyrics, while “Remember Me?” and “I’m Back” showcase the intricate wordplay, dark comedy and technical delivery that distinguish the album.
The record also contains some of Eminem’s most personal and emotionally intense material. “Marshall Mathers” addresses his complicated relationship with public perception and family, while “Drug Ballad” explores substance use through a mix of dark humour and candid observation. “Kim” is a particularly disturbing and theatrical narrative, while “Criminal” closes the original album with a defiant return to the provocative persona that runs throughout the record.
Celebrating 25 years since its original release, this anniversary edition revisits one of hip-hop’s landmark albums. The expanded release includes two bonus live performances captured at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards: “The Real Slim Shady” and “The Way I Am”. These performances offer an additional snapshot of Eminem at the height of the album’s initial cultural impact.
More than two decades after its release, The Marshall Mathers LP remains a defining work in Eminem’s catalogue, recognised for its technical precision, distinctive storytelling and lasting influence on mainstream hip-hop.
