Green Day took a more adventurous turn with Warning, their sixth studio album and a record that deliberately stepped beyond the straightforward pop-punk formula of their earlier work. Originally released in 2000, the album found Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool embracing a broader palette of acoustic guitars, folk influences, melodic songwriting and stripped-back arrangements while retaining the band's unmistakable energy.
Produced by Green Day and Rob Cavallo, Warning feels more reflective and mature than the band's previous records. The songs explore relationships, politics, isolation, mortality and everyday life, often replacing the distorted urgency of Dookie and Insomniac with cleaner guitars and more spacious arrangements.
The title track “Warning” immediately establishes the album's more considered direction, while “Blood, Sex and Booze” and “Church on Sunday” combine catchy melodies with darker subject matter. “Fashion Victim” takes aim at celebrity culture and consumerism, while “Castaway” captures the restless desire for freedom that runs through much of the album.
The second half moves through “Misery”, with its distinctive mariachi-inspired arrangement, and the acoustic-led “Deadbeat Holiday” before arriving at “Hold On” and “Jackass”. “Waiting” offers one of the album's most melodic moments, while “Minority” became one of Green Day's most enduring songs, built around a defiant refusal to simply follow the crowd.
The album closes with “Macy's Day Parade”, a subdued and reflective finale that perfectly captures the more mature character of Warning. Rather than relying entirely on the explosive punk sound that had made Green Day famous, the album demonstrates a willingness to experiment with structure, instrumentation and songwriting.
To celebrate its 25th anniversary, Warning was remastered and released in 2025 as this limited edition Neon Orange coloured vinyl pressing. The single LP contains the original twelve-track album across two sides, making it a distinctive collector's edition of one of Green Day's more musically adventurous records.
