LOLA YOUNG – THIS WASN'T MEANT FOR YOU ANYWAY
TRANSPARENT RED VINYL LP
This Wasn’t Meant for You Anyway is the debut studio album from British singer-songwriter Lola Young, originally released on 21 June 2024. A bold and unfiltered introduction to her distinctive musical identity, the album blends alternative pop, indie rock and contemporary R&B with candid songwriting, sharp humour and emotionally charged performances.
Recorded in Los Angeles and produced by her friend and collaborator Solomonophic, the album captures Young’s willingness to explore the complicated realities of relationships and self-discovery without disguising the less comfortable parts of the experience. Her writing moves between anger, vulnerability, attraction and regret, creating a record that feels immediate, unpredictable and deeply personal.
The album opens with “good books”, establishing its restless energy before moving into “wish you were dead”, a confrontational exploration of the emotions that can follow a difficult relationship. “big brown eyes” takes a more intimate approach, while “conceited” examines confidence, attraction and self-perception with Young’s characteristic directness.
“messy”, one of the album’s standout tracks, became a major breakthrough for Young, earning widespread attention for its relatable exploration of imperfection and the pressure to meet other people’s expectations. Its success introduced her songwriting to a much wider international audience, highlighting the appeal of her distinctive voice and refreshingly honest perspective.
Elsewhere, “walk on by” and “you noticed” explore the complicated dynamics of romantic attachment, while “crush” captures the intensity and uncertainty of attraction. “f**k” delivers another uncompromising moment, embracing the album’s provocative attitude, before “intrusive thoughts” turns towards the more uncomfortable corners of the mind. The closing track, “outro”, brings the collection to its conclusion.
Across eleven tracks, This Wasn’t Meant for You Anyway balances infectious melodies with emotionally exposed songwriting. Young’s willingness to combine humour, frustration and vulnerability gives the album its distinctive character, establishing her as an exciting voice in contemporary British alternative pop.
