Before Stick Season transformed Noah Kahan into one of the defining voices of modern folk-pop, I Was / I Am captured an artist wrestling with the uncomfortable space between the person he had been and the person he was becoming.
Released in 2021 as Kahan's second studio album, the record explores identity, relationships, self-doubt and the complicated process of growing into yourself. There's a restless energy running through the album, with introspective songwriting sitting alongside bigger, more expansive production.
“Part of Me” opens the record with a sense of uncertainty and emotional conflict, while “Animal”, “Caves” and “Bad Luck” explore the darker corners of relationships and self-reflection. “Godlight” brings one of the album's most vulnerable moments, while “Someone Like You”, featuring Joy Oladokun, adds a soulful duet to the collection.
In hindsight, I Was / I Am is particularly interesting because it sits directly between Kahan's early work and the enormous breakthrough that followed. You can hear many of the themes that would later become central to Stick Season — home, identity, change, nostalgia and the struggle to understand yourself — beginning to take shape.
This blue vinyl edition gives the album a distinctive physical presentation, making it an important piece for collectors following Kahan's catalogue from Busyhead through to his later work.
