PAOLO NUTINI - SUNNY SIDE UP
2021 Vinyl Reissue
Paolo Nutini’s second studio album, Sunny Side Up, marked a striking evolution from the intimate singer-songwriter sound of his debut. Originally released in 2009, the album finds Nutini stretching confidently across soul, folk, blues, jazz, skiffle, rock and pop, creating a record that feels both timeless and unmistakably his own.
From the instantly recognisable “10/10” and the soulful “Coming Up Easy” through to “Candy”, “Pencil Full of Lead”and “High Hopes”, Sunny Side Up is full of character. Nutini’s distinctive, weathered vocal sits at the centre of the record, while the arrangements constantly shift in style without ever feeling disconnected.
Produced by Paolo Nutini and Ethan Johns, the album captures an artist stepping beyond the confessional approach of his debut and embracing a much broader musical palette. Folk traditions sit alongside New Orleans-inspired brass, jazz, soul and classic pop influences, giving the record an unusually rich and organic feel.
The album became a major commercial success in the UK, reaching number one and cementing Nutini as one of the country's most distinctive young songwriters. This 2021 vinyl reissue brings the album back to the format it deserves — a warm, eclectic and hugely characterful record that has aged remarkably well.
