PUDDLE OF MUDD - LIFE ON DISPLAY
20th Anniversary Edition — 180g Black Vinyl 2LP
Puddle of Mudd followed the huge success of Come Clean with Life on Display, their second major-label studio album and a record that saw the band continuing their post-grunge sound while pushing into heavier, more melodic and occasionally more experimental territory. Originally released in 2003, the album arrived at a point when post-grunge and alternative rock were firmly established at the centre of mainstream rock.
Produced by John Kurzweg, who also worked on Come Clean, Life on Display combines heavy guitar riffs with radio-friendly melodies and Wes Scantlin’s distinctive vocal delivery. The production is polished without losing the rough-edged quality that had become part of Puddle of Mudd’s identity.
“Away from Me” opens the album with a driving guitar riff and one of its most immediate choruses, while “Heel Over Head” brings a more melodic edge. “Nothing Left to Lose” and “Change My Mind” continue the album's mixture of heavy guitars and introspective songwriting before “Spin You Around” delivers another memorable hook.
The second half moves through “Already Gone”, “Think” and “Cloud 9”, with the band shifting between harder-edged rock and more restrained moments. “Bottom” and “Freak of the World” add further weight before “Sydney” and “Time Flies” bring the album towards its conclusion.
The closing “Life Ain't Fair”, included here as a bonus track, gives the vinyl edition an additional piece of material beyond the original album sequence.
Although Life on Display followed one of the biggest-selling post-grunge albums of its era, it established its own identity within Puddle of Mudd’s catalogue. The record captures the band at the height of their early-2000s period, balancing heavy alternative rock with the accessible songwriting that had brought them to mainstream attention.
This edition is the 20th Anniversary pressing on 180g black vinyl, released by Music On Vinyl in 2023. It marks the first time Life on Display was officially released on vinyl, presented as a 2LP set with the complete album plus bonus track and a four-page booklet containing lyrics.
