Sam Fender’s debut studio album, Hypersonic Missiles, announced the arrival of a songwriter capable of combining widescreen guitar rock with sharply observed, socially conscious storytelling. Released in 2019, it established Fender as one of the most distinctive new voices in British rock and became a UK number-one album.
The album was written, recorded and produced largely from Fender’s own warehouse studio in North Shields, alongside longtime collaborator Bramwell Bronte. That DIY foundation sits beneath a remarkably expansive record, with huge guitars, driving rhythms and anthemic choruses giving the songs a sense of scale without losing their intimacy.
The title track sets the tone with its combination of urgent rock and political unease, while “The Borders”, “White Privilege” and “Dead Boys” demonstrate Fender’s ability to turn contemporary issues and difficult subjects into emotionally direct songs. “Play God” and “Will We Talk?” bring a more immediate, radio-ready energy, the latter becoming one of the album’s defining tracks.
The record closes with “Leave Fast” and “Use (Live)”, the latter providing a fitting reminder of the raw performance energy at the heart of Fender’s music. Across its thirteen tracks, Hypersonic Missiles balances personal observation with wider social commentary, giving the album a character that remains distinctly its own.
