SAM FENDER - SEVENTEEN GOING UNDER
180g Black Vinyl
Sam Fender’s second studio album, Seventeen Going Under, is a deeply personal coming-of-age record rooted in memory, family, friendship and the experience of growing up in North Shields. Released in 2021, it builds on the widescreen rock of Hypersonic Missiles while turning the songwriting inward, creating one of Fender’s most emotionally direct albums.
The title track immediately establishes the album’s autobiographical character. “Seventeen Going Under” looks back at Fender’s adolescence and the circumstances that shaped him, while “Getting Started”, “Aye” and “Get You Down”continue through stories of youth, relationships and the pressures of everyday life.
Fender’s ability to turn personal experiences into expansive rock songs is particularly evident on “Spit Of You”, a moving reflection on his relationship with his father, and “The Leveller”, which carries the album’s social and political awareness into a more personal setting. Elsewhere, “Last To Make It Home”, “Mantra” and “Paradigms” add further layers to a record that constantly shifts between intimate reflection and huge, anthemic songwriting.
Recorded with longtime collaborators including Bramwell Bronte, the album combines Fender’s distinctive Geordie vocals with driving guitars, powerful drums and expansive production. The result is a record that feels rooted in a very specific place and period of his life while dealing with experiences that remain universally recognisable.
This edition is pressed on 180g black vinyl and presented in a gatefold sleeve with a printed inner sleeve. With its combination of personal storytelling and arena-sized rock, Seventeen Going Under remains an important record in the modern British rock catalogue.
