THE LUMINEERS - BRIGHTSIDE
LIMITED EDITION TANGERINE VINYL LP
Brightside is the fourth studio album from American folk-rock band The Lumineers, released on 14 January 2022. Marking the band’s first full-length album in more than two years, the record captures a renewed sense of spontaneity and optimism, bringing together their signature acoustic-driven sound with vibrant melodies, rhythmic piano and an energetic, almost euphoric approach to songwriting.
Written by founding members Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites, the album was primarily produced by longtime collaborator Simone Felice, with David Baron overseeing the recording, mixing and engineering at Sun Mountain Studios in Boiceville, New York.
Recorded across sessions in the winter and spring of 2021, Brightside embraces a more immediate, stripped-back approach, with the band performing much of the instrumentation themselves alongside a selection of collaborators.
The title track opens the album with an infectious combination of driving percussion, bright piano and an uplifting chorus. “A.M. Radio” follows with a nostalgic reflection on music, youth and the memories that stay with us, drawing on the emotional directness that has become central to The Lumineers’ songwriting. “Where We Are” takes a more atmospheric turn, exploring uncertainty and the feeling of being caught between moments in life.
Elsewhere, “Birthday” brings a melodic, piano-led energy to the record, while “Big Shot” delivers one of the album’s most immediate and memorable hooks. The second half moves through the relationship-driven reflections of “Never Really Mine”, the buoyant rhythm of “Rollercoaster” and the more introspective “Remington”. The album concludes with “Reprise”, a brief closing piece that brings the record to a gentle finish.
Across its nine tracks, Brightside balances the emotional storytelling that defined earlier releases such as Cleopatra and III with a brighter, more spontaneous musical direction. The result is a concise and cohesive record that showcases The Lumineers’ ability to create songs that feel both deeply personal and universally relatable.
